Image-correct VariantHogarth, William (1697 London 1764). And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and Judgment to come, Felix trembled. While governor Felix is obviously impressed by the elocution of Paul, the prosecutor Tertullus is not. Engraving. Inscribed: Plate 3 / From the Original Painting in Lincoln’s Inn Hall, Painted by Wm. Hogarth., otherwise as above. 42.4 x 52.6 cm.
Interesting variant to the second sheet of Paul before Felix. Contrary to that side-correct with the painting, then in the inscription instead of “Engraved by Wm. Hogarth from his Original Painting …” here “From the Original Painting … Painted by …” as fully quoted above. The erased Pope verses still recognizable in outline as on that, too, otherwise before the addition of Felix’ wife missing in the 1st state however Impression on strong paper from the plate reworked by the royal engraver James Heath (1757 London 1834) about 1822 (“Even these impressions became relatively rare today though”, Art Gallery Esslingen 1970; and Meyers Konv.-Lex., 4th ed., VIII [1888], 625: “A fine edition”).
