Hogarth, William (1697 London 1764). Several Children of the Foundling Hospital. The institute established by Captain Coram before which he himself figures with servant, mothers and not least numerous children. Above: Arms of the Foundling Hospital. Engraving by Thomas Cook (c. 1744 – London 1818). Inscribed: Hogarth pinxt. / T. Cook sculpt. / Published by Longman, Hurst, Rees, & Orme, July 1st. 1809., otherwise as above. Subject size 17.3 x 13.8 cm.
Interesting with respect to the things the children hold in their hands as symbols of their future professions as sounding lead, trowel, spinning-wheel, model sheet, broom, mathematical instruments. Several already in sailor’s dress and waving at nearby ships. – Cook’s popular later, smaller version. – Trimmed within the wide white platemark.
– – – The same in steel engraving about 1840, but in reverse to the one above and without the arms. Inscribed: Das Findelhaus. / The Foundlings. 12.7 x 19.6 cm.
